Interpreting ANOVA Summary Tables
Present 2 X 2 designs and ask students to explain what a variety of hypothetical outcomes would indicate (e.g., "both main effects are significant, but not the interaction" or "the interaction is the only significant effect").
Students find the task more useful if you display a table of means and an ANOVA summary table for each task. In addition, go through all the possible outcomes of the experiment (see Table 12-4, p. 365).
This exercise gives you an opportunity to share the results of a classic study (e.g., Schachter's arousal by mood of stooge interaction that supported his cognitive labeling theory of emotion) or the results of a recent journal article. Alternatively, you can present hypothetical results from a study that you or a student are thinking about doing.
